On crowded streetcorner downtown. Lebanese run with a Lebanese cook. Seems to be a hangout of the local Lebanese business community. Some smoking hookas out front. Good food. Casual surroundings. Also, delivery, though the food. As of 4/05, closed for renovations.

Open air or outdoor dining. "Mongolian" barbecue or a set menu. You can sit out by the pool under the stars. Popular with Peace Corps volunteers living it up in Kampala and other younger travelers. Has an international feel. Service was a little relaxed, but beautiful surrounding.

Upscale Indian restaurant. Good for business lunches. Upstairs off of a main street in the business district. Excellent northern Indian food. Better than anything I've had in the States. Less rich than Khana Khazana. More varied menu. A bit more spicy. Also does catering.

In Sikh sports club, a mixed menu. Indian food, low-concept "fusion" Indian-western, and western food. Very convenient to Kololo hill. Worth a visit.

Khana Khazana -- Acacia on Kololo Hill (8/05)

Indian restaurant, with Ugandan waitstaff in traditional South Asian attire. Open air seating around a small, man-made waterfall. Nice on cool evenings. Terrific Indian food with a varied menu. Never had a bad dish. Great for visitors or just for a dinner for two -- although you will always bump into someone you know.

Outside at the Speke Hotel. You can watch Kampala drivers attempt to park their cars on the sidewalk. Adjoins the Rock Garden bar, a large and lively outdoor bar popular with the local prostitutes. Food at Khyber Pass was better than expected. Spicy Indian fare.

Upscale Italian. Perhaps the most creative cuisine in Kampala. Like most expensive places, primarily for expats. Our Italian friends say it’s the most authentic Italian in Uganda. Some dishes using Ugandan ingredients (tilapia, avocado etc.). Good food and excellent desert selection. Best pies and cakes in Kampala.

Imperial Resort Beach Hotel -- new hotel, behind golf course, next to the Lake

Modern, large dining area. Lunch buffet. Only place in Uganda that I found a chef carving a turkey.

Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel -- near Lake Victoria. Off of Entebbe-Kampala road.

Old colonial hotel. Outdoor dining. Lake Victoria is about a quarter-mile away. View from the upper deck. Nice, fresh food, featuring fresh lake fish.

Overlooking Lake Victoria, you can dine inside next to the garden or inside beside the fireplace. Solid, but unspectacular food. Fish, chicken, pork and beef, with some vegetarian dishes. Nice breakfast pancakes.

Jinja Nile Resort -- off the Jinja road, towards Bujagali falls

Pretty resort hotel overlooking the Nile. Dining outside. Buffets set up for lunch and dinner but you also can order off the menu. Buffets are a mix of Ugandan, Indian and European. OK, but pretty good desserts.

The Source Café -- on the main street

Older, colonial style building, nicely re-done, houses a casual place for baked goods and light meals. Run by missionaries involved with the local community.

Dining room for the luxury lodge. Stunning views of Kazinga channel and mountains in the distance. Food can be very good, especially when not overcrowded. When fully booked, they often do a dinner buffet, which is not spectacular. Omelettes at breakfast are excellent.

Small hotel with dining facilities. Need to order food ahead. If you stay there, they have a breakfast buffet with fruits, toast, eggs, and cereal. They also can cook food that you purchase elsewhere.

Decent food. Nicest place in town. Nothing fancy, but OK if you like basic cooking and fried products

Al's Bar -- on Ggaba Road in Kabalagala. Long-time institution. Late hours. Lots of prostitutes and older western men. Can get wild.

Blue Africa -- next to Crested Towers in Nakasero. Wide open, under the stars. Nice set up. Not very crowded, however.

Bubbles O'Leary -- on Kololo. An actual Irish pub, removed from Dublin, brick by brick. Guinness in a bottle. Outdoor seating. Very popular w/ expats, but some Ugandan clientele as well. Live music a few days a week.

Just Kicking -- in Kisemente mall. Lively, British flavored pub. Cricket, Rugby, Soccer usually on the TV. Packed for major sporting events. Serves snacks (including spicy chicken wings). Can sit outside as well. Quiz nights on Thursdays.

Kelly's Irish Pub -- in Nakasero. A starting/finishing point for the hash. Popular with expatriates. Can drink outside.

Nob Hill -- on the north side of the city. A Ugandan watering hole. African music and European football. Dancing. Nicely put together.

Rhino Pub -- at Sheraton. Sporting events, pool table. Dancing on weekends.

Rock Garden -- If you like prostitutes, this is the place. Part of the Speke Hotel downtown. Huge outdoor bar. Crowded. Aggressive prostitutes.

Rouge -- Nakasero, next to Bank of Baroda. Kampala's first real cocktail bar. Décor would not be out of place in DC or Bangkok. Martinis not that great (but, hey, they're martinis, in Uganda). The new place to be for young expats and wealthy Ugandans.

Rugby Club -- off Lugogo bypass, behind the new Shoprite. Mixed Ugandan and expat crowd. DJ and some dancing. Open air and inside. Pool table. Casual.

New Foods and Beverages

Matooke -- stewed unripened bananas. A major starch and an accompaniment to many Ugandan dishes.
Groundnut sauce -- made with peanuts, often served with Matooke. Not spicy, unlike Thai peanut sauce. Has a nice earthy taste, but may need a kick.
Goat stew -- Goat can be tasty, but often is very tough and chewy and can be gamy.
Nile perch -- a bit oily, but good for smoking. Bony and you need to be careful when eating a fillet. Some may find it a bit fishy, but I think its fine.
Bitter eggplant -- stewed with onions. Not bad.
Black current juice -- imported from Kenya. Not too sweet.
Passionfruit juice -- served at every restaurant. Not too sweet and not as acidic as citrus juices.
Stoney's -- a local ginger beer. Bottled by Coca Cola. Stronger than U.S. ginger ale. I think it’s a good mixer with rum.
Waragi -- Ugandan gin, made from bananas. Fairly smooth. Good with tonic and lime.

Black Marlin -- Southern cape, near the Cape of Good Hope. Overlooking False Bay. (1/05)

Beautiful views of False Bay and surrounding mountains. Extensive outdoor seating. Seafood menu. Popular with tourists visiting the Cape of Good Hope. Better food than expected, but not on level of finer Cape Town dining.

Popular trattoria. Packed on Sunday afternoons. Casual, pretty good food. Nice to sit outside and people watch.

Chui Lodge -- two hours west of Nairobi, on far side of lake.

Gorgeous lodge. Wonderful meals included in the room rate. From dining room, you can look at western escarpment of Eastern Rift Valley and wild animals nibbling on the grass.

Tented camp along the ololooro escarpment. Beautiful views over the plains as animals meander by. Much of the food is served buffet-style. Little is great, but most is good, fresh and plentiful. Afternoon chicken barbecue and bread pudding for dessert are the best bets.

Located in upscale mall, its an Italian restaurant with more of a Latin feel. Good, basic Italian food. Some seafood.

Breezes Resort -- on east side of the Island on the Indian ocean

Very good seafood at the seafood restaurant. Nicely priced wines. The main restaurant has a good seafood buffet on Fridays- lots of grilled rock lobster and prawns. The Breakers is private dining. Very romantic little cabana right on the beach. Lots of food, though expensive. Lobster was decadently rich. Excellent chocolate mousse.

Serena Hotel -- in Stone Town, on the water, a block from the main square

Pretty view overlooking the harbor. Can eat by the pool or indoors. Food was OK. Plenty of seafood, but very salty
